11 from UP, two from Delhi, Total 50 Monuments Missing – Government

In a matter of ‘grave concern’ 50 of 3,693 monuments in India have gone missing, according to a submission made by the Ministry of Culture, in Parliament.

As per Indian Express report, the Ministry has revealed that several monuments protected by Archaeological Survey of India have been missing for various reasons like ‘constant urbanization, and encroachments, while few submerged under water and dams. Meanwhile, the ministry has further claimed that these missing monuments are difficult to trace as they are located in remote areas and inside deep forest.

It is a matter of grave concern that several monuments of national importance under the protection of ASI (Ministry of Culture) have become untraceable over the years due to rapid urbanization, submerged under water and reservoir, and encroachment activities. Due to their remote location they are unable to trace back,” read a submission made in the Parliament on December 8, 2022.

In a report titled, ‘Issues relating to Untraceable Monuments and Protection of Monuments in India,’ the Ministry made the submission to the Parliament Standing Committee. According to the report, 11 monuments are from Uttar Pradesh, two each from Delhi and Haryana. The list also includes monuments from Assam, West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

14 monuments in the list have been lost duel to urbanization while 12 have been submerged under the waters of dams and reservoirs. 24 monuments are untraceable so far, read the report.

Meanwhile, physical verification for the first time since Independence was conducted in 2013, which revealed that 92 of them were missing.
